The New Pike Place MarketFront is Coming

We’re transforming a surface parking lot into more of the Market to love and share – take a look:

  • The site functioned as a surface parking lot from 1970s – 2015. Look closely to see the Foundation of the Market building that burned down in 1974.

Look what we’ve built

Construction began June 2015 and the MarketFront is on-schedule to open by summer 2017

  • Aerial view of MarketFront construction as of September 2016

See what’s coming

True to the character and purposes of Pike Place Market, the new MarketFront will offer opportunities for farmers to sell direct to customers, local businesses to start up and low-income neighbors to find housing and services. Take a peek:

  • Jarr Bar will move to the new MarketFront in summer 2017.

Take a peek into the MarketFront’s past:

  • 1903 – Tunnel Construction North Portal (University of Washington Libraries, Special Collections)

The site of the future Pike Place MarketFront was home to the Municipal Market Building, the original home of Bavarian Meats.

In 1974, a fire destroyed the Municipal Market building. For 40 years the Market explored options to rebuild this site, but because of the active Burlington Northern Santa Fe train tunnel underneath the site, original plans to rebuild on the site were long shelved due to the cost of construction over the tunnel.

Now, 40 years later, the Market is able to complete the vision to rebuild this site due to plans to demolish the Viaduct. Replacement parking funds from the City of Seattle and Washington State are driving the timing and funding of the new MarketFront project.

Yet, Pike Place Market still needs $9 million in private philanthropy to complete the project. That’s where YOU can help! Write your name into Market History.
